Tuesdays with Morrie

I read this book in flat two days. This book is really a gem. A masterpiece! Journey from life to death is explained in a simple and uncomplicated manner. You read 188 pages and I am sure, your perspective towards life changes.

Mitch Albom, in this thesis (it is indeed a thesis on life, death & conversations of a dying person with a middle aged person), give a detailed account of discourse by his mentor, guru, counsellor – his teacher... Morrie Schwartz.

Personally, I never came across such a teacher so far whom i can idolize and look forward for guidance or direction towards life which Mitch got from Morrie. .... people say.. When you are ready ... the master will appear... I am waiting for that experience.

I am just penning down certain golden phrases/ statements by Morrie as given in the said book, which are beyond doubt life transforming:

1.       Once you learn to die, you learn how to live.

2.       If you accept that you can die at any time, then you might not be so ambitious.

3.       About family: The fact is, there is no foundation, no secure ground, upon which people may stand today of it is not the family. Love each other or perish. Without love, we are birds with broken wings.

4.       There is no experience like having children.

5.       Learn to detach. Do not cling to things, because everything is impermanent.

6.       Morrie’s  talk about emotions: Loneliness..... you let go, let tears flow, feel it completely- but eventually able to say : “All right, that was my moment with loneliness. I am not afraid of feeling lonely, now I am going to put that loneliness aside and know that there are other emotions in the world and I am going to experience them as well.”

7.       Morrie’s talk about fear of aging: Aging is not decay. Its growth. Its more than negative that you are going to die, it’s also the positive that you understand you are going to die and that you live a better life because of it.

8.       Morrie’s talk on Money: Money is not a substitute for tenderness. When I am sitting here dying, when you most need it, neither money nor power will give you feeling you are looking for, no matter how much of them you have.

9.       Morrie’s talk on Marriage: there are few rules about love and marriage. If you do not respect other person, you are gonna have a lot of trouble. If you do not know how to compromise, you are gonna have a lot of trouble. If you cannot talk openly about what goes on between you, you are gonna have a lot of trouble. And if you do not have a common set of values in life, you are gonna have a lot of trouble. Your values must be alike.

I think thats a lot about this masterpiece. Read this till end, I am sure you will like this.

    I liked point no. 5.

Challenge for you - Pl read autobiography of a yogi which I guess you have left midway and provide synopsis here - I will then benefit out of it :). It is too taxing to comprehend and absorb that writing.
